Farm Experience at Harry Place Farm

Discover the story of farming in the Langdale Valley with a private, behind-the-scenes tour of our working fell farm.

Our 2–3 hour private farm experience is available to both guests staying with us at Great Langdale Glamping and visitors to the valley. Tours are currently offered at 11am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, although alternative times may be possible by arrangement.

Priced at £150, each tour is completely private and can accommodate up to six people, making it a relaxed and personal experience for couples, families and small groups. The tour is suitable for all ages and gives you the chance to experience life on a traditional Lake District farm first-hand.

Experience the farming year

No two farm tours will be exactly the same.

Farming in the Lake District changes throughout the seasons, so your visit will reflect what is happening on the farm at that particular time of year. We will introduce you to the annual farming calendar, explain the work taking place and, wherever possible, give you the opportunity to get involved.

Depending on the season, this could include experiences such as lambing and feeding lambs in spring, working with the sheep throughout the summer, or seeing the tups being raddled and prepared for breeding during October and November.

Because this is a real working farm, every visit is shaped by the animals, the weather and the jobs that need doing that day — which is all part of the experience.

More than just farming

During the tour we can also explore some of the traditions, skills and stories that have shaped both the farm and the wider Langdale Valley.

  • The traditional craft of dry stone walling and why these distinctive walls are such an important part of the Lake District landscape.
  • How farmers work with and care for the local environment and wildlife.
  • How farming in the valley has changed over the generations, from traditional practices to modern machinery and methods.
  • The challenges facing hill farming today and why diversification has become an important part of keeping family farms viable.
  • The history of our farm and the wider Great Langdale Valley, and how farming has helped shape the landscape visitors see today.

Above all, the experience is an opportunity to spend time with a local farmer, ask questions and gain an insight into a way of life that visitors would rarely get to see.

Whether you are staying with us, visiting the Lake District with your family or simply curious to understand more about where your food comes from and how this remarkable landscape is managed, our private farm tour offers a memorable and authentic way to experience Great Langdale.
